A third generation farmer, Senator Bill Dix was born and raised on his family farm near Janesville, Iowa.  Senator Dix graduated from Janesville High School in 1981, and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University in 1985.   After college, he became a sales manager with Cargill, Inc. of Minneapolis until 1991.  Senator Dix returned to Iowa to join his parents in their diversified farming operation, specifically noted for their production of cantaloupe and pumpkins sold in many grocery establishments throughout Iowa and Minnesota.  In 2007, Senator Dix assumed sole ownership of farming operations.

Senator Dix and his wife, Gerri, have three children, Michael (17), Will (15), and Libby (13).

In 1996, Senator Dix made his first bid for the Iowa House of Representatives.  He served five two-year terms in the Iowa House.  During his service in the Legislature, Senator Dix has been an outspoken advocate for limiting government, encouraging an environment that fosters economic growth and challenging the status quo.  He has sponsored legislation eliminating the inheritance tax and the tax on residential utilities, as well as giving working Iowans a 10 percent across-the-board income tax reduction.

Senator Dix served on numerous House committees and held leadership roles as Chair of the Government Oversight Committee, House Assistant Majority Leader, and House Appropriations Committee Chairman.  He also served as the Legislative Campaign Chairman, where he spearheaded Republican campaign efforts to retain the majority in the House of Representatives in 2002 and 2004.

During his tenure at the State Capitol, Senator Dix has been honored by many organizations throughout the State of Iowa.  He was named a “Friend of Agriculture” by the Iowa Farm Bureau each year.  He was named “Guardian of Small Business” by the National Federation of Independent Business/Iowa.  He has been awarded the Outstanding Service Award by the Iowa Health Care Association. Through the years, he was awarded “Legislator of the Year” by several organizations, including Iowa Motor Truck, Inc., Association of General Contractors, and Independent Telephone Companies.  He was also named “Friend of the Fair.”

In 2006, Senator Dix was a candidate for the 1st Congressional seat vacated by Jim Nussle.

In 2007, he accepted the challenge presented to him by the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease to include a resolution to the Republican Party of Iowa’s state platform.  He was successful and the resolution passed in July 2008.

On October 22, 2009, Senator Dix announced his plan to seek political office once again.  He defeated the incumbent in Iowa Senate District 9 on November 2, 2010. He was re-elected in 2014 to serve the people of Iowa Senate District 25.

Senator Dix has many hobbies, including many sporting activities, spending time with his family and singing.  He is a member of many organizations, including the Shell Rock Music Association, Iowa Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, Farm Bureau, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, and Iowa Corn and Soybean Growers.
